So you want to know what is Twitter?

I get a ton of folks asking me that everyday. The next question I get asked is can I use Twitter for Business?

Let me address "what is Twitter" first. Twitter is one of the many social media sites that are on the Internet to day. A social media site is nothing more than a place for people to gather and talk to each other in one form or another.

There are many other sites that fall into this social networking theme. Some of the more common ones you may have heard of are Myspace and Facebook.

There are many other social networking sites out there as well but Twitter is really starting to take off and you really do need to be a part of it.

What Twitter is, or will become very soon, is akin to the office water cooler. A place where people gather to see what's going on and find out what the latest gossip is. The whole premise behind Twitter is to answer one very specific question. "What are You Doing"?

Now I know what you're saying.because I said the same thing. Who really cares what I'm doing? Well, believe it or not some people do care. I guess it's the gossip side in all of us!

So lets be more specific about what Twitter is. Twitter allows you to tell people what you are doing in 140 characters. That's it! Every time you make a "post" in Twitter, it's referred to as a Tweet!

Don't ya just feel the love? So, next you can "follow people" and read their Tweets. Following people just means you choice who's Tweets you want to receive and read.

So for example, if your Brother or Sister joined Twitter, and you choose to follow them, you would see what they are talking about. Then if you wanted you could response to them.

Now you know it didn't take long for us Internet Marketers to develop a way to use this for business.

So on to the next question; Twitter for Business?

You bet ya! If you know how to use Twitter correctly, you can use Twitter for your business very effectively.

Twitter will allow you to pick your followers as well as have people follow you with pinpoint accuracy. You will be able to get people in your same niche to follow you.

This is really what you want to do. Remember the so-called guru's of Internet marketing are using Twitter for business too! You don't think they would waste their time on twitter if it wasn't making them any money do you?

Using Twitter for business is a great tool if you are careful with your tweets. You don't want to be "tweeting" about a product you are trying to sell all the time. You need to have some tweets that are of some value to folks.

You must always keep in mind that Twitter was designed to be a social tool not a marketing tool. However, if done right you can enjoy the best of both worlds!
